How to Select the Right Trailer for Heavy Equipment

Selecting the right trailer for heavy equipment transport is critical for safety and efficiency. Here is how to choose the right equipment for your load.

Assess Your Equipment

Start by measuring your equipment: length, width, height, and weight. Also note any special considerations such as tracks vs. wheels, low ground clearance, or detachable components. These measurements determine which trailer types can accommodate your load.

Trailer Types for Heavy Equipment

Different trailer types are suited for different equipment:

  • Standard flatbed: For equipment within legal dimensions that can be driven or lifted on.
  • Step-deck (drop deck): For taller equipment that exceeds standard flatbed height limits. The lower deck provides additional vertical clearance.
  • RGN (removable gooseneck): For heavy equipment that can be driven onto the trailer. The gooseneck detaches, creating a ramp for loading.
  • Multi-axle lowboy: For very heavy equipment that needs weight distributed across many axles. Can handle loads exceeding 80,000 lbs.

Weight Considerations

The weight of your equipment is a primary factor in trailer selection. Standard flatbeds typically handle up to 48,000 lbs of payload. For heavier equipment, step-decks and RGNs can handle more weight. For very heavy loads (over 55,000 lbs), multi-axle trailers are required to distribute weight and meet DOT limits. Your heavy haul provider will calculate axle weights and determine the appropriate trailer configuration.

Loading Method

How your equipment will be loaded onto the trailer affects trailer choice. If the equipment is self-propelled (can be driven on), an RGN is often the best choice. If the equipment must be lifted by crane, a standard flatbed or step-deck may work. Communicate your loading method to your heavy haul provider so they can recommend the right trailer.

Permits and Route Planning

Heavy equipment transport often requires oversize/overweight permits, especially for large construction equipment. Your provider should handle permit acquisition, route surveys, and escort coordination. Provide accurate dimensions and weight to ensure proper permitting and safe transport.

FAQS

Quick Answers

It depends on the excavator size. Small excavators may fit on a standard flatbed. Larger excavators typically require an RGN or step-deck. Very large excavators may need a multi-axle lowboy.
